While flightseeing is an excellent way to experience many of these remote landscapes, for the purposes of completing my quest, I wanted to set foot within each protected unitβand yes, including both the park and preserve sections if it was a combined national park unit. ↩︎
12 photos of bush plane landings in remote Alaskan parks and preserves
Weβve visited some rather remote parks and preserves in Alaska to complete my Treasured Places quest, many of which required chartering a bush flight and consulting with maps and the pilot to figure out where we might be able to land1. Sometimes thatβs on a lake, sometimes on a beach, sometimes itβs a gravely flat spotβ¦but itβs nearly always a unique experience.
Here are a dozen such landings.
Misty Fjords National Monument

Aniakchak National Monument

Gates of the Arctic National Park

Admiralty Island National Monument

Alagnak Wild River

Katmai National Park

Bering Land Bridge National Preserve
(And yes, those are indeed grizzly bear prints on the right side of the beach)
Cape Krusenstern National Monument

Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve

Denali National Preserve

Noatak National Preserve

Kobuk Valley National Park

Somehow I managed to finish #Blaugust2025 already! 31 posts this month. Many of which were “On This Day” photo posts from previous years.
I’m having a blast looking back at “On This Day” photos for each day for #Blaugust2025. Here’s the last five:
A midday stroll down the road
Sunset in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia (no edit, straight from the iphone)

White Pocket, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, AZ - from an #OnThisDay in 2007 visit to help better delineate a parking area so vehicles would stop driving over the formations.

#WildlifeWednesday from #opcOnThisDay in 2022, a visit to what is now called White Horse Hill National Game Preserve in North Dakota.
I visited because it used to be called Sullys Hill National Park, and well, I have a quest to visit all βformerβ (decommissioned or transferred) National Park units in the US (because of course I do).

#opcOnThisDay in 2017, I was lucky to coincide my visit to Pullman National Historical Park (at the time, a newly designated national monument) with Labor Day, which is cool given its infamous role in labor organizing.

It's not hard to find a Lincoln statue near Springfield, Illinois. Here are four that I ran across #opcOnThisDay in 2012.
