A great little walk around Newberry Volcanic National Monument. Scott had a nice little visit with a resident ground squirrel. -J t.co/4ZO868D6W…

When I think of Winnemucca, Nevada…I definitely think “Gateway to the Pacific Northwest.”

And the world’s largest piece of driftwood, originally marking the start of the Winnemucca-to-the-Sea Highway, affirms my intuition 😂 -S t.co/9vOWFJxqn…

Bumpass Hell

Today’s highlight was our hike to Bumpass Hell in Lassen Volcanic National Park, my favorite name in the parks system. -S t.co/28hkIqhPn…

The highlight of yesterday was setting up camp in Lassen Volcanic National Park…and then just hanging out next to Summit Lake all afternoon. A blanket, some chairs, shade and a breeze, beer and snacks, occasional wading, and a couple short walks. That’s it.

It was magnificent. t.co/aM9wWrCp0…

It has been very hot here the last few days (ironically hotter than Phoenix). So our last stop of the day was to cool off in a Lava Beds NM cave. -J t.co/JSWwJun1T…

We were able to do the tour at the Tule Lake Segregation Center. This was Jen’s 10th of the 10 Japanese War Relocation Centers and she’s now finished that quest (Scott finished a few years ago). Such a sad but important part of our history to know. -J t.co/5aHqMxrVr…

We spent a few great days hanging out with @publiclandlvr and Mr. PLL. Even had a chance to cool off with some kayaking in Whiskytown Lake! We are definitely looking forward to our next visit with them! -J t.co/ImylSAxHV…

Today was about my other uncle and aunt, who live in nearby San Francisco.

They still run races every weekend, and last year my uncle won a national running award for his age group (80-84) for his half marathon time. 😳

Next up: the incomparable @publiclandlvr and fam. -S t.co/yYVZLM8mM…

The first several days of this trip are all about re-connecting with others.

Day one was all about my pal @HubbardJeff and his better half, @mexcelentegirl.

Yesterday was about my aunt & uncle in Palo Alto, who brought me on my first big road trip and also love the outdoors. t.co/eAsvSmcUc…

Well…because it’s an objective for my Former National Park units quest. #GoQuesting1576

That’s right, for a dozen or so years in the 40-50s, NPS managed it as a national park unit. 🫣

Our first stop today was Millerton Lake State Recreation Area near Fresno.

It’s basically a reservoir with some shoreline recreation sites, and an old county court house. A simple water rec opportunity for local residents…

So why did we drive out of our way to visit? 🤔

And we’re off!

Highlight of our first day was hanging with our friends Jeff and Lupe. We always feel fortunate to spend some time with these two great humans, and it had been far too long since our last visit. t.co/6mxdxnJmU…

It was very tasty! t.co/lUZCnQvxw…

Had a nice stroll along the Potter Marsh Boardwalk last evening. Something we’ve been meaning to do the last 2 times we’ve been up to Alaska but could never really make work. -J t.co/BQFMYmCWv…
