Hello Colorado.
To really appreciate the complexity of colors at Petrified Forest, you have to spend a few minutes to visually unpack the scene before you.
Not a bad place to camp, amongst the largest & most dense forest of old growth joshua trees in the world.
Γ’ΒΒThe Wilderness holds answers to more questions than we have yet learned to ask.Γ’ΒΒ Nancy Wynne Newhall may have been onto something there…
The temps have cooled here in Phoenix for the first time this summer, but I’m still wishing I was back in Hawaii today…
We visited Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area in August, part of our loop around the Pacific Northwest. It doesn’t boast the most stunning scenic vistas, but there’s still some subtle beauty in the way the reservoir breaks with the prevalent rolling landscape.
It was raining at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore when we arrived, but it made the scenic loop drive all the more interesting. Is there anything better than loop drives in national parks?
This photo of the aptly-named Desert Barβan off-the-grid, cash-only (and tv-free) solar saloon in the mountains outside of Parker, Arizonaβis from a new post on the blog (link on bio) titled “I gave up the NFL to make more time for adventuring.” The post is less about the NFL than about being intentional in choosing priorities in your life and how that can impact how much time and money you have available for travel and adventures. Check it out and share it with a friend who’s been complaining that they haven’t traveled or hiked enough recently.
This view of Diablo Lake certainly didn’t disappoint. I had been dying to see the North Cascades National Park complex for at least 15 years, so I was quite thrilled to finally check it out last month. Make no mistakeβI’ll be back for more adventures.
Find your path.
Not a bad spot for a picnic…

“Daddy, why do they call it Yellowstone?”
Trippy colors at the Painted Hills unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
The Windows section of Arches National Park is incredibly accessible, making it highly popular with park visitors. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t find yourself a wee bit of solitude…
I feel like I’ve missed nearly every monsoon storm this summer.
Two weeks ago, I drove from Phoenix to Montana to see this vista at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. It was an “orphaned” national park unit that I needed to mark off in my quest to visit all 417. Of course, I also visited Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Dinosaur, and Arches while I was passing by. But the point of the trip was to mark off Bighorn Canyon, my 375th national park.
Quests are an excellent way to inspire more travel. I just published a comprehensive guide to selecting, adopting, and successfully completing a personal travel quest. Link in bio!
It’s hard to capture the impressive Coal Mine Canyon in a single photo. It’s one of those places you really need to explore in person to best appreciate.
Hey buddy! Come back, where ya headed?
